Meet the pioneering Boden Project team at DCW Frankfurt

Data Centre World Frankfurt 2019 is fast approaching and with just under a month to go we’re excited to announce the details for a panel discussion on the topic of the EU H2020 funded Boden Type DC One project (BTDC).

About the Boden Type DC One project

In 2016, research showed that the data centre industry represented 3-5% of global power use and it was the fastest-growing carbon footprint in ICT. With future applications expected to drive demand even further the European Union’s research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020 announced a project to address data centre efficiency.

Funding for the Boden Type DC One project was released in September 2017, with the ultimate goal to build a demonstration site of the most energy and cost-efficient data centre in the world. A pan-European consortium was assembled consisting of Hungarian data centre engineering specialist H1 Systems, UK based cooling provider EcoCooling, German research institute Fraunhofer IOSB, Swedish research institute RISE SICS North and infrastructure developers Boden Business Agency, with the task to design and validate a future proof concept.

Two years on and the facility is a 600kW living lab prototype and demonstration site, that is being tested by providers and end-users in a real operation environment with all aspects of its operations measured. The Horizon 2020 funded BTDC houses over 300kW of Open Compute Project and HPC equipment at a PUE of <1.01. It’s been an incredible two years with some remarkable results reported from the prototype, with these to be discussed as part of the DCW Frankfurt panel.

Title: The Boden Type Data Centre:  Is this really the most efficient data centre in the World?

Discussion points:
On the panel, members of the consortium will be reviewing the project’s progress and they will be disseminating results of the Sweden based project. The panellists will discuss how they have achieved unparalleled cooling efficiency across a variety of real-world scenarios using holistic control strategies and how the experience gained in this project can be applied to other IT operations.

John Laban and Mark Acton will join the consortium members to discuss how these innovations can be applied across the industry as a whole and help facilities of all shapes and sizes achieve similar results. They will ask whether the findings of this project can present serious opportunities for server manufacturers?
